Received in November and followed instructions for planting in my big container on the patio. She leafed out beautifully. When we got close to the first freeze, I brought her up onto my sheltered porch and double wrapped the pit with bubble wrap. Each evening I burlapped the foliage and my height unwrapped after sunrise and temperature rise for the day. For the well below freezing period, I brought my rose inside and used a grow lamp to supplement window light. While inside, some creature completely webbed her; I used a mixture of soap and water to hand wash each leaf and stem (very carefully due to her thorns). When warm enough, returned her to my porch and sprayed thoroughly with Neem oil since some webbing had reoccurred. As you can see, she has come back wonderfully and has produced a fabulous first bloom.
What a beautiful first bloom — and what a dedicated gardener you are! The care and attention you gave her through the winter is truly impressive, and it clearly shows in that gorgeous Peace bloom.
We do want to gently share one tip for future winters: we actually recommend keeping roses outdoors rather than bringing them inside, even with a grow lamp. Bringing them indoors can disrupt their natural dormancy cycle and, as you discovered, creates the perfect conditions for pests like spider mites to thrive. The porch protection and wrapping you were already doing is exactly the right approach — trust those instincts!
If you ever have questions about winter care or anything else along the way, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're always happy to help!
Sincerely,
The Heirloom Team
The Peace rose arrived as described and well packaged. Directions were easy to follow and the rose already has buds! I'm excited for the years to come!
I just planted this rose and it already has a bloom! Leaves started sprouting in a few days after planting. At first, it looked like it would not have much pink but the second day the color changed a lot and the pink really came out. The pictures were taken on subsequent days. I can't wait to see it in the spring and summer.
