  • About James Galway®
  • Other Details
  • James Galway® is the versatile Shrub or Climbing Rose you’ve dreamed of. David Austin describes him as "A superb large shrub with long, slightly arching, almost thorn-less growth". James Galway® is a tough, disease-free rose that is excellent for the back of a mixed border and can also be grown as a Climber topping out around 12’. His flowers are 4" across and full with over 100 petals shading to pale pink at the edges. He is a continuous bloomer with a delicious, old rose fragrance. Give James Galway® space and light and he will take off! Or keep him tidy and contained for an excellent, upright growing Shrub.

Pristine prince

My James Galway arrived March 4th. I watched the Heirloom instruction videos and followed everything to a T... soaking, really big hole, expensive amendments, etc. I was GREATLY rewarded! Today is May 30th, and I have 4 blooms and even more buds. Not much if any scent (though he is so young, so it may come with time). Leaves are dark green, somewhat matte, and absolutely pristine -- no spots or holes or scorch marks. Like, museum quality foliage! I never spray anything, and never will, but do lots of companion planting to encourage ladybugs & parasitic wasps. The blooms are medium pink, not a delicate or soft color, but not glowing pink or hot pink. A lovely, goes-with-anything, cool pink. The full bloom resembles my Gertrude Jekyll in shape, which is great, but why does no one talk about the buds?? The buds, or young blooms when they are JUST opening, has such an exquisite, ruffled shape to the edges of the petals. Just gorgeous! P.S., don't judge me please, I snapped the photos before tying the canes to the obelisk! Promise, he is nice and neat now :)

Large bundles of blooms

I think this is 3rd year of the James Galway roses on the trellis. All the way to top with continuous blooming. Great smell as well. LAnne

Very impressive

My first David Austin rose! This guy is a stand out for sure. Out of the 6 varieties I bought with it this rose is has about 6" of growth on the others, vigorous! Canes seem very sturdy. Starting to get first blooms and they are already stunning. Another thing to note is the foliage is a darker green than all my other varieties as well which I am a big fan of. My one negative note is for some reason it was hit by powdery mildew when all other varieties show no signs of it. There are 4 others in the exact same location so James may be a little susceptible to PM. I have sprayed it with baking soda solution per the heirloom roses recipe and it seems to be responding!
