I live in a hot, dry Zone 9 (Northern California Sierra Nevada foothills), and this rose thrives here. The blooms are very fragrant. While I was waiting to buy an Apothecary’s rose (currently out of stock), I recently made a lovely, sensual, fragrant rose petal jam with these petals that was reminiscent of my Austrian grandmother’s. A winner.
I grew Hansa in zone 4. It grew to over 8 foot tall and was covered in huge, fragrant blooms over a long period. The scent pervaded the whole yard. Highly recommended.
Healthy rugosa foliage. 3"-4" deep fuchsia, exuberantly fragrant double blooms [50 petals, I'm guessing?] It wants to be a round, bushy, thickly foliaged shrub. So thorny that deer leave it alone in my sister's yard in Ohio, anyway. I wish it would sucker MORE. It'll build up to 7 x 7 feet.
Mine originally got quite big - 15'x15'. After a bad winter I had some dieback, which brought it down to size. Everyone asks me about this rose. Zone 8, Portland.
