Why we can offer such a strong guarantee for the health of our roses: our own-root roses are healthier, heartier and offer a variety of benefits over grafted roses.

    What Is The Own-Root Difference?

Own-root roses are roses grown from cuttings taken from stock plants. Unlike grafted roses, the roots of own-root roses are the same variety as their flowering tops.

In contrast to the majority of rose growers in the United States who sell grafted roses, Heirloom Roses sells only own-root, virus-free roses. Our roses are grown from a “mother” or “stock” plant. Own-root roses are normally 12-18 months old when shipped, while grafted roses are usually 2-3 years old. Own-root roses will quickly catch up in size to grafted roses and will outlive their grafted counterparts by as much as 35 years!

    Why choose own-root roses?

    • Own-root roses are hardier than grafted roses because they do not have a grafting point which is susceptible to damage. Own root roses are all one plant! The bud union of a grafted rose is the place where two roses are merged together. This grafting point is vulnerable to cold and can be easily damaged during a hard winter, causing the plant to die or revert back to rootstock.
    • Own-root roses come back true to variety every time! If your plant is pruned too low, run over by a lawnmower, or frozen to the ground, it will grow back true to variety because the roots are the same as the top portion of the plant.
    • Own-root roses are shapelier because they send up shoots called “basil breaks” from their own root system. This creates a fuller plant over time, which adds to increased vigor, bloom, and life expectancy.
    • Own-root roses have no rootstock suckers, meaning more energy is sent to the main plant.
