With this rose we’ve enjoyed fragrant wafts from the front of our house to our backyard patio when it’s full flush comes in May/June. It’s a show stopper and neighbors never fail to comment. Not as profuse as the first flush but its fragrance and blooms continue into winter. Fall season brings small to medium clustered rose hips as blooms relentlessly give in to winter cold. On occasion a few blooms have held on until mid December. Planted nearly 15 years ago when we were zone 5 we officially became zone 6 in 2023. Place this rose where you will enjoy its fragrance most but give it plenty of room to sprawl for low carefree maintenance or be prepared and dedicated to prune and train to your desire. It will require regular attention to keep desired size if planted near a structure. Don’t recommended but it will take abuse and neglect. It stayed in its delivery pot for nearly 2 years when received because of my unexpected health problems. It broke through container and rooted. Finally my niece helped me plant it in the ground. A few years later we moved it again to where we have enjoyed it most. It remains at the corner of our front porch where we regularly walk by or enjoy sitting with family and friends. The fragrance hangs under the overhang of our porch during that first flush then randomly throughout the season. I truly enjoy it even just coming and going from the front door or when i leave the front windows open. I’ve pruned it severely and trained canes in the direction I’ve desired making a semi privacy screen and beautiful backdrop to the front garden. One year a few canes graced the top of our roof but required anchoring to keep from flopping. It was probably about 17’. I’ve neglected it and allowed it to go in full bush and have cut it back to almost ground level. Roots do not travel as some very old ramblers do so it does stay where planted. This is one tough rose! It truly has been an enigma and the most enjoyable versatile rose I’ve ever had. Always a conversation piece! How could I not recommend? Get it!
Just been in the ground a couple of days and its already bushing out heavily. Can't wait to see its beautiful blossoms!
I live in zone 9a in Texas, and I had never owned a rose before. I bought a Darlow's Enigma to try my hand at rose gardening at the end of June. The rose came very well packaged and was fairly trimmed for travel, but it quickly started exploding with new leaf growth! Got it planted in the ground a few days after receiving, and about a month later, I got my first cluster of buds with one bloom! I have very dense, clay soil where I live, but I made sure to thoroughly amend the soil with peat moss, worm castings, and bone meal, and fertilized it with high quality fish fertilizer right after planting in the ground. I haven't had to intervene at all, and it already has more bud clusters coming in despite it being the height of hot Texas summer here. I can't wait to see what it looks like in a year!
This was my first order from Heirloom Roses. After being quite disappointed with other companies in the past, I was hesitant to try again. However, Heirloom Roses provided an exceptionally well cared for, potted, well-rooted, well-branched large specimen of a rose! While my recently arrived Darlow’s Enigma has yet to bloom, I was so impressed upon receiving it with its excellent condition and vigor that I am already planning to add another. Both should spread delightfully over our fence providing beauty and fragrance in our zone 4b/5a garden.
