James Mitchell was bred in 1861 in France and produces tidy, rounded, very double flowers that open flat in a delightful shade of pink with lilac undertones. He is a rather unusual rose with a very strong fragrance. Louise Clements first saw this once-blooming rose in England and fell in love with its beauty and marvelous scent.

James Mitchell

Ordered 2023 and it is doing excellently. It bloomed the same year it was ordered and put forth a lot of new basal breaks and laterals too. James Mitchell, like other Centifolia Moss roses, only bloom once, but it is enough to last near a month. The buds and undersides of the leaflets have that pine scent, which is an added feature. I really do favour Moss roses, and it is due to the added foliage scent and mossy coverings on the sepals. At various stages of the buds opening, that sticky moss frames the slow opening bloom for a most ethereal and ineffably beautiful effect I have witnessed. James Mitchell must have grown two to three feet before the end of 2023. This year, it put out so many buds and blooms, I could not count them all. Some blooms were almost single but most of the time they were in small clusters of three into five. The fragrance is exceptional and would make a lovely lady's perfume. Jame Mitchell is amongst my favourites now. Jame Mitchell has been doing remarkably well. I love the colour. I love the thick, moss-covered buds, which have a wonderful fragrance when touched. I love the very strong fragrance this rose emits. If you enjoy Old Garden Roses and have enough room for one, try planting it in a sunny area, preferably near an outdoor bench or seat, so you can enjoy the fragrance.
